Onion cold storage in India
Onion wants it cold and dry, the opposite of potato’s humid store, so the two should not share a chamber. Onions must be cured before storage. In ICAR trials, onion cold-stored at 0–5 °C lost 5% in 120 days against 55% in a ventilated store, but about a quarter sprouted within 15 days of coming out, so plan the sale before the release.

Common questions
- At what temperature is onion stored in cold storage?
- Around 0 °C at 65–75% humidity, by the USDA handbook; ICAR’s onion directorate reports good results at 0–5 °C and 60–65% humidity. Onion needs drier air than potato.
- How long can onion be kept in cold storage?
- Pungent varieties 6–9 months at 0 °C; mild or sweet onions only 1–3 months. Cure the onions first, and expect some sprouting within two weeks of taking them out.
- Can onion and potato be stored together?
- Not well. Potato wants 90–95% humidity and onion 65–75%, and a chamber cannot hold both. Ask for a separate chamber.
